The Olympian: Clean water vital no matter how much fish we eat

The Olympian ran an editorial yesterday on the importance of a higher seafood consumption rate on which to base water quality standards in Washington State. The piece focused on the impact to tribal communities:

Studies show the largest consumers of fish are Indian tribes, Asians and Pacific Islanders. The Squaxin Tribal Council is on record as saying the current state standard “… is a ridiculously low amount and does not represent in any way what the majority of Washingtonians are actually eating.”

Because tribal people eat a lot of fish from the Columbia River, their concerns and those of some conversation groups prompted a study by the U.S. Geological Survey. It found that more than 100 toxins used in everyday life are entering the river through wastewater-treatment plants from Wenatchee to Longview.
