Makah Tribe Signs Five-Year Lease With Wave Energy Company

NEAH BAY (Sept. 15, 2003) – In the midst of severe water shortage, the Makah Tribe envisions a time when energy derived from ocean waves will power a plant that will turn salt water into fresh water.

While that day may be some time in the offing, the first step toward that goal is represented by an agreement the tribe signed recently with AquaEnergy Group Ltd., a Mercer Island company, working to demonstrate that their wave energy converters are the wave of the future.

The five-year lease agreement between the tribe and permits the company to run a cable from their wave energy demonstration project 3.2 miles off Neah Bay to a utility pole on the reservation.
