Bellingham Herald: Lummis hold hearing on new water rules

The Bellingham Herald:

Lummi Nation has scheduled a public hearing Wednesday on the tribe’s new water quality standards.

Last March, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency formally recognized the tribe’s authority to regulate the quality of surface water on the reservation under the authority of the U.S. Clean Water Act. Washington and other states have similar federally delegated authority to set water quality regulations within their boundaries, but states have no such authority on Indian reservations.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 at the Wex li em Community Center, 2100 Wex li em Way off Lummi View Drive.
